KHA Quality Webinar: Building a Sustainable, Evidence-Based Mortality Review Program

Via  lecture and PowerPoint presentation, this virtual offering will cover an array of topics, including an intuitive and sustainable approach to establishing an evidence-based mortality review process, strategies for prioritizing quality improvement efforts to enhance patient outcomes and safety, and methods for leveraging data integration—such as linking Electronic Medical Records (EMR) to the Patient Safety Evaluation System (PSES)—to streamline reviews and support data-driven decision-making.

Objectives– At the conclusion of this offering, attendees will be able to:

  1. Describe a practical and sustainable approach to establishing an evidence-based mortality review process.
  2. Explain how to apply a strategic focus to effectively prioritize quality improvement initiatives.
  3. Identify ways to supports meaningful outcomes through the development of a solid and enduring mortality review program.

Speaker: Branden Robertson MPH, NR-P, CPHQ, CPHRM, CPPS

Branden Robertson is the Senior Director of Quality and Patient Safety at Carilion Clinic’s flagship hospital in Roanoke Virginia.  Here, Branden manages the organization’s Patient Safety Evaluation System, Patient Safety activities, and partners with the Mortality, Outcomes, Stroke, and Sepsis programs.  Branden is an adjunct professor at Radford University and Roanoke College and holds a Master of Public Health from Liberty University.  Branden is a certified professional in Healthcare Quality, Healthcare Risk Management, and Patient Safety.  Branden is a Nationally Registered Paramedic and has experience in Emergency Medical Services, Law Enforcement, Emergency Communications, Risk Management, Healthcare Quality, and Project Management.

Branden’s interests include creating strong, sustainable solutions to modern day patient safety problems and educating the next generation of healthcare and public health professionals.  Branden is also passionate about innovative Root Cause Analysis and Action development, improvement to patient outcomes, and preventing in hospital mortality.

Continuing Education Offering:  The Kentucky Hospital Association is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Kentucky Board of Nursing (KBN). KBN approval of a continuing nursing education provider does not constitute endorsement of program content. This educational activity is offered for 1.2 contact hours, with offering number 5-0023-12-25-054, expiration date 12/31/2025. No partial credit will be given. To receive credit, participants must attend the entire educational offering, provide their nursing license number, and complete the offering evaluation. After the conclusion of this webinar, a Survey Monkey evaluation link will be sent to attendees. Attendees will have a deadline of 11/26/2025 to complete the survey in order to receive the CEU certificate. Failure to complete any step in the process outlined above will result in non-issuance of CEU credit in accordance with KBN guidelines.
