Character Matters: Strategies for Improving Recruitment and Retention in Rural Hospitals
Rachel Forbes, Tonya Heim, RN, MHA, CIC & Tim Hester

In a 2007 survey of rural hospital administrators, “recruitment and retention” was cited as the most pressing concern facing their organizations. A positive culture can create a remarkable experience for patients, their families, employees and physicians and elevates the value of the brand when it comes to recruiting and retaining quality professionals. A panel comprised of Rachel Forbes, Vice President of Health Care Strategic Planning with Ten Adams, Tonya Heim, RN, MHA, CIC, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, Gibson General Hospital and Tim Hester, President and Chief Executive Officer of The York Companies, will highlight the experience of three organizations that have successfully implemented a character-based training program that has positively impacted the culture of their companies.

Erik Wahl

Erik Wahl is a recognized artist and speaker who challenges organizations to transcend mediocrity through creativity. His success as a speaker and unique understanding of vision traces back to his training as an artist. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of San Diego where he studied both art and business. After first working in the business world and playing with his art, he now plays in the business world by working with his art.

He has founded The Wahl Group, a consulting firm specializing in helping organizations identify and implement breakthrough thinking to achieve extraordinary results. He is passionately committed to helping businesses explore new levels of vision and performance through creativity.

His program, The Art of Vision, is uniquely designed to channel innovative strategies to create extraordinary results. By breaking apart the traditional rules, Erik Wahl challenges and inspires organizations to re-define their commonly held assumptions and misconceptions about vision, goals, success and creativity. Recovery Audit Contractors – Experiences of a Pilot State
Kathy Reep, MBA

The Medicare Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) program was authorized by Congress to justify improper Medicare payments. The RAC program began operation in three states under a demonstration project and will expand to all states by January 1, 2010 with implementation scheduled to begin in Kentucky in 2009. RACs may look at federal fiscal year 2008 paid claims and forward. This program will discuss Florida’s experiences as a RAC pilot state and what Kentucky hospitals have to look forward to in 2009.

Kathy Reep, MBA, is Vice President of Finance, Florida Hospital Association. Ms. Reep has over 25 years experience in health care. She worked with the Florida Hospital in Orlando for 18 years and held positions in Patient Business, Internal Audit, Systems Management, DRG Management and as an Associate Director of Budget. Prior to leaving Florida Hospital, Ms Reep held the position of Reimbursement Director.

Office of Homeland Security and Hospital Preparedness
Adam H. Edelen

The Kentucky Office of Homeland Security (KOHS) coordinates efforts with public and private partners on issues affecting homeland security. KOHS has initiated a comprehensive prevention-focused homeland security strategy to ensure Kentucky’s communities, first responders and families have the resources and information necessary to be prepared for disaster or attack. Kentucky’s hospitals have been involved for several years in preparedness planning with other key organizations in the state. Adam H. Edelen, Kentucky’s Homeland Security Director, will discuss how the Office of Homeland Security and health care providers can coordinate efforts to strengthen Kentucky’s preparedness for manmade or natural disasters.

Adam Edelen was appointed Homeland Security Director by Governor Steve Beshear. He is a member of the executive team at Thomas & King, Inc., where he directs strategic planning for America’s eighth largest restaurant franchise company. Prior to his work for Thomas & King, he served as an aide to Governor Paul Patton and later as Vice President of the Greater Lexington Chamber of Commerce.

Hospital-Physician Alignment Strategies
Colleen McKinley, Rene Savarise & Terry Heath

Hospital-Physician strategies ranging from the simplest to the most sophisticated will be discussed at this session. This will include gain sharing, revenue participation bonds, “turnkey” leasing arrangements, classic joint ventures, hospital-employed physicians and hospital and physician jointly-owned managed care initiatives. The discussion will cover strategy structure, operational considerations, the financial impact of the strategies and the effect of Kentucky Certificate of Need law on hospital-physician alignment.

This program will be presented by Colleen McKinley, Rene Savarise and Terry Heath of the law firm of Hall Render Killian Heath & Lyman.

Comprehensive Leadership for Senior-Level Executives
Thomas A. Atchison, Ed.D.

Leadership is part art and part science that is learned and developed over time. High performing health care executives understand the need for lifelong development of both the art and the science of leadership. Yet how do successful executives coordinate the disparate pieces of leadership to form a mosaic of purposeful culture and aligned values, and communicate their vision in a way that effectively rallies followers around organizational goals? This seminar is designed for those senior-level health care executives who want to continue to fine-tune their leadership potential. Tools, concepts, case studies and measurable indicators used to drive and measure superior leadership performances will be the focal point of this seminar.

Thomas A. Atchison, Ed.D., is President and founder of Atchison Consulting Group. Since 1984, Dr. Atchison has consulted with health care organizations on managed change programs, teambuilding and leadership development. He has consulted to the military, health care vendors and government agencies on the intangible aspects of health care. He also has taught several courses on leadership and change management for the American College of Healthcare Executives. Dr. Atchison’s expertise in health care is built on over 35 years experience in a variety of management positions in health care institutions and organizations. He earned his doctorate degree in Human Resource Development from Loyola University of Chicago and is an associate member of the ACHE.
